Mapping Out the Metaverse With Machine Learning

Machine learning is an essential tool for the new world to meet the users' requirements in the most accurate way. And most of the budding projects have already started working in the right direction.

Metaverse – the high-tech world has already taken the internet by storm since the announcement of the word “Meta” by Mark Zuckerberg. The users are eagerly waiting for the big day so that they can experience the unimaginable. But so many expectations ultimately put a lot of performance pressure. The expansion of the Metaverse will be a crucial point, focusing on machine learning.

Machine learning is the ability of a system or machine to emulate intelligent human behavior. This property of machine learning makes it even more crucial in developing the metaverse.

Why Do We Want the Metaverse?

Metaverse immersion may seem to be the reason for its popularity. But on the contrary, it gives a wide range of accessibility to its users, and that’s what makes it lucrative and productive. Companies investing in the virtual world want to certify that users have continuous and constant access to everything relevant to them based on their location and needs, even if it differs from what they might see, hear, smell or feel.

The success of the metaverse depends on this approach. Social media focus on improving the communication between users. Similarly, the Metaverse will only be an achievement if it can provide a better version of reality than what we live in. The metaverse needs to be advanced, enriched, enhanced, mediated, and automated.

Embodied Internet

Where would you go without your phone? The answer is nowhere. The importance of the phone and the internet in our lives is undefinable. Today, being connected to the world through your phone is peace of mind, more than just a habit. We can call ourselves professional by reaching out and clicking to people through our technology.

Embodied internet refers to a space where not only can you view the content, but you are in it. We can say that it is the same as shown in “The Matrix”. Embodiment is the process that converts an idea or concept into a real, noticeable and tangible one. So, an embodied internet is the world where the manifestation of digital space takes place. This might include traffic patterns, credit scores, grocery shopping, and dinner suggestions.

Metaverse vs Hyperreality—Two Approaches to Simulation

The idea of the Metaverse is not new. Before Zuckerberg and other futurists, the postmodernist philosopher Jean Baudrillard propound the concept of hyperreality (continuous effort to look like itself in such a way that it becomes difficult to distinguish reality from a simulation of fact) in his work “Simulacra & Simulations”. A few examples of such hyperreality are movies like “The Uncanny Valley” and “Disney World”.

In the words of Jean Baudrillard:

“The real is produced from miniaturized units, from matrices, memory banks, and command models – and with these, it can be reproduced an indefinite number of times…It is hyperreal: the product of an irradiating synthesis of combinatory models in a hyperspace without atmosphere.”

An example of its functioning is: When you copy and paste something (text or image), you can do it innumerable times. Similarly, hyperreality enables you to make an object from itself, just like how a massive lego object can be made from individual lego blocks.

Concerning the digital world, The Metaverse will be built by combining several digital versions of reality and merging them into a single universe —ideally, including the one we live in.

Metaverse and Machine Learning

In Metaverse, the digital realities augment the real world. It is similar to using VR (virtual reality) in day-to-day tasks such as grocery shopping or meeting friends. There are an enormous amount of opportunities for people familiar with machine learning.

For example, much work must be done before executing the grocery shopping task. The model (or avatar) should understand the basic things like the location of the produce aisle, how to pick up an orange, keeping the orange in the correct basket and whether the refrigerator doors have handles or not. Humans could rely on machines only if machines accurately execute the basic tasks listed above. For that, devices need humans to teach them first. A pattern of inputs given by the user makes models work. This is achieved by technologies like Meta AI (artificial intelligence), machine learning, AR (augmented reality), etc.

Role of Machine Learning in Metaverse

Machine learning will be the new technology used to develop the Metaverse. What does it do? The answer is: everything. Machine learning will be responsible for every action in the Metaverse, from guiding the users to new places to being their deciding partner. Few examples of machine learning doing its part in the Metaverse:

  • It will suggest you go to a bar or a coffee shop based on the time you open your Maps app.
  • Tools like speech recognition and biometrics will help in the authentication process.
  • After a few days of taking the same route, it will tell you the road to take from the office to your home.
  • Showing the interactions, you have with the world
  • Making fuels inferences made about your usage.

In a way, we can say that machine learning boost and refine the map of the metaverse.

Machine Learning Is Already in the Metaverse

The emergence of the Metaverse and its process is unclear. But we have pretty sure climbed the first few steps. Industries like art, defense, gaming, and others are already waiting and working for the interoperable VR jungle. Designing the required environments and elements for the metaverse would be the next logical step in the process.  Machine learning is an essential tool for the new world to meet the users’ requirements in the most accurate way. And most of the budding projects have already started working in the right direction.
